Project Information

NewChurchHistory.org provides an electronic medium for articles and projects related to the life and times of Emanuel Swedenborg, the influence of his theological works worldwide, and the history of the New Church from the 18th century to the present day.

NewChurchHistory.org represents a collaboration between the history major at Bryn Athyn College of the New Church and Glencairn Museum, both located in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The New Church is based on the Bible and on the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, an 18th century theologian. Swedenborg's thirty-five volumes of theology, which New Church people sometimes call the "Writings," present a new vision of Christianity.

Swedenborg himself never attempted to found a church organization, but New Church groups based on the Writings began to appear shortly after his death. NewChurchHistory.org is concerned with the history of these organizations, as well as with Swedenborg's life and times, and the influence of his ideas in areas such as science, philosophy, theology, literature, social science, and the arts. We are also interested in the unique philosophy of history found in the Writings, and with efforts to interpret the spiritual history of the world from a New Church point of view. Resources on the Web site are indexed alphabetically by author, and are also organized into the following subject headings:

Swedenborg's Life and Times

Swedenborg and Other Historical Figures

History of the New Church

History from a New Church Perspective

We publish original material in addition to developing an archive of articles that have been published elsewhere but are difficult for most people to access.
